Comedian Atsuko Okatsuka's coming-of-age story | Define American
When you think about immigration, you probably don't think about airports, amusement parks, or ranch dressing, but maybe you should.
This #AsianPacificAmericanHeritageMonth, we are proud to share "Atsuko's Story," a comedic short film now screening at the Washington D.C. APA Film Festival and, later this year, the Phoenix Film Festival:
Atsuko Okatsuka is a successful and unapologetic comedian, actress, and writer repeatedly named by Vulture and Time Out LA as a comedian to watch.
She is also formerly undocumented. When Atsuko was 10, her family flew from Japan to the United States for a "two-month vacation" and never left. Growing up, undocumented was confusing. There were exciting discoveries — like ranch dressing and basketball — but also a constant feeling of not belonging.
Atsuko's story might not seem like a traditional immigration story. When mainstream media talks about immigrants, they don't often talk about Asian Americans or tell stories that make you laugh. But the story of American immigration is more diverse than you think, it's not just tragedy and stories from south of the border — it's also comedy, ranch dressing, and people from all parts of the world.
Personal stories like Atsuko's matter and that is why we will continue to bring you complex stories about what it means to be American.
