Kereru/NZ Wood Pigeons, are the second most common species we admit to hospital.
These beautiful birds are prone to flying into windows or getting hit by cars. They have also been known to, on occasion, get a bit drunk on fermented fruit which makes them more prone to having accidents.
They are the only bird species remaining in NZ that is capable of eating some of the bigger fruits and berries and spreading them so that our forests can continue to thrive. These birds are essential to the health of our ecosystem.
They were voted NZ Bird of the Year in 2018 (https://www.birdoftheyear.org.nz/kereru), a very well deserved title!
