Text-Based Protocol: Telnet is a text-based protocol, which means that all communication between the client and the server is done in plain text. This includes usernames, passwords, and any commands or data exchanged during the session. As a result, Telnet is not secure and is vulnerable to eavesdropping and interception.

Port 23: Telnet typically operates on port 23, which is its default port. When connecting to a remote device via Telnet, you specify the IP address or hostname of the target device along with the port number (e.g., telnet 192.168.1.1 23).

Remote Terminal Access: Telnet provides a way to remotely access the command-line interface (CLI) of a device or server. It is commonly used for managing network equipment like routers, switches, and servers. Users can execute commands, configure settings, and retrieve information from the remote device as if they were physically connected to it.

Insecure Protocol: Telnet does not encrypt the data transmitted between the client and the server, which makes it vulnerable to network sniffing and security threats. Because of its lack of security, it is generally not recommended for use over untrusted networks, such as the internet.

SSH as a Secure Alternative: In contrast to Telnet, SSH (Secure Shell) is a secure protocol that provides encrypted communication between the client and the server. It offers the same remote terminal access and command execution capabilities as Telnet but with strong encryption, making it the preferred choice for remote access to network devices and servers in secure environments.

Historical Use: Telnet has been around for many years and was one of the earliest methods for remote access to computers and network equipment. While it is still supported on many devices for compatibility reasons, it is considered outdated for secure remote administration.

In summary, Telnet is a legacy protocol for remote terminal access to network devices and servers. While it is still available on many devices, it is not secure for use over untrusted networks, and SSH is the recommended alternative for secure remote access and management.
