KOREAN ADOPTEE MOTHERLAND TOUR. RETURNING TO MY BIRTH CITY 29 YEARS AFTER ADOPTION
I was 29 years old when I returned to South Korea after being adopted at 9 months old. Returning to my birth city was emotional and special. I didn't know the best way to share this experience but hope that someone gets something out of this. At the time (6 years ago) I was not in the mindset to capture more on video.
Returning to one's birth place is especially meaningful for an international adoptee. For the first time ever I was surrounded by other Korean people. I have lived in places like New York City where it is very diverse but never in a place where everyone looked the same as me.
I broke up this trip into four parts. Part 1 is Daegu (my birth city), part 2 is Busan, part 3 is Jeju Island and part 4 is Seoul. Those videos will be coming up soon as well as detailed overviews of things like our pre-wedding photoshoot, DMZ tour and other things we did during our trip.
If you're an adoptee considering a motherland trip I hope this gives you some insight from a fellow adoptee's perspective. No two adoptees will have the same experience but I gained so much from other adoptees when I was going through all of this so hopefully this will help someone else.
