Windows XP Tour (Beta Version 1) Walkthrough
A walkthrough of an earlier version of the Windows XP tour. This dates back to May 2001! I found this on Windows Whistler Build 2475, and it's the only version of Windows Whistler to include this version of the tour. It is different from the final version of the program, unlike the released version of the OS. In order to access the "Windows XP Basics" section, I converted it to an executable file using SWF Decompiler Premium. Here are the following differences:
In the intro, the way it was put together is different than the final version, and plays the tune from "Best for Business" that actually plays in the same version (but remixed in this version). Also, the music icon next to the exit icon is different.
The images of the tour clips are completely different.
This tour contains several lines we never heard before that have been unused in the final version, making the tour clips extended. Also, it contains an interesting music track of "The Connected Home and Office" and remixes of the tracks that have also been unused in the final version.
In the tour clips, the icons shown on the left can be seen. They lead you to the "Help and Support" articles when you click on them.
The "Windows XP Basics" section (which I mentioned above) was included in the final version, but in this version, it was apparently cut out for unknown reasons. There is an SWF file for it named "segment5," but I converted it to an EXE file to access it.
There are no buttons to exit the program, mute the music and restart the tour shown after the intro is played. To exit, you have to press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to exit via Windows Task Manager (select it if you're using Virtual PC) and exit the program from there. It's impossible to mute the music in this version unless you're watching the intro.
In the Windows XP Basics section, the icons at the bottom of the screen are just round blue circles and contains more animated images. When you hover over them, it plays a short bit of the logoff sound. Once it started to run via the EXE file (only when the SWF file for it was converted to that format), the tabs cannot be seen on the top-right corner of the screen.
On each tab, the sentence "To continue the Tour, click an icon" is not shown.
The OS logo still reads "Windows XP" instead of "Windows Whistler." It disappears after the intro ends.
Sorry about the cursor not shown in the video. While I was editing this video, it had a black border around it, so I had to disable it. Enjoy!
