Ateenalaisten Laulu - Finnish patriotic song
"Athénarnes sång" was written by Swedish poet Viktor Rydberg, it is based on an elegy by Greek poet Tyrtaeus. Jean Sibelius created this composition to go with Rydberg's poem. It was written as a protest to Czar Nicholas II's February Manifest that would strip the autonomy of the Grand Duchy of Finland. It was first performed 26th of April 1899 together with Sibelius' first Symphony.
