Will upgrading RAM and CPU improve SMB performance on unraid?
My attempt to improve SMB performance by upgrading ram and cpu.
PLEASE NOTE:
My results showed that the ram upgrade improved SMB performance as it allowed more data to be cached before writing to the array. The upgrade showed little to no improvement with direct to disk write speeds.
Before Upgrade:
20 GB ECC DDR3 Ram
Dual Xeon E5620 CPU
After Upgrade:
48 GB ECC DDR3 Ram ($40 USD)
Dual Xeon X5675 CPU ($58.55 USD)
Drive Configuration:
8x 8TB HGST SAS Drives (7.2k RPM) - Main Array
2x 250GB Samsung SSD - Cache (mirrored) - VM's and Docker Containers are installed to the cache
1x 120GB Kingston SSD - (using unassigned devices plugin) MariaDB and InfluxDB storage - (For various docker containers)
