Balanced Audio Myth? Sony MDR-M1 Tested with 4.4mm & XLR
In this video, I test the compatibility of the 4.4mm balanced cable from the Sony MDR-1AM2 with the Sony MDR-M1 headphones. The good news? It works perfectly and delivers excellent sound quality when paired with the iFi hip DAC and the Monoprice Monolith THX 887 amplifier.

However, there’s one issue: while the MDR-M1 has a screw mechanism to secure its stock cable, the 4.4mm balanced cable doesn’t have this feature. This means the cable can come loose if pulled, which might be a concern for some users.
I’ll demonstrate the setup, show the pros and cons, and share my thoughts on whether this is a practical solution for balanced audio.
