This is actually harder than it looks and much more so if the foreign body is plastic or wood. Metal or glass will scrape against metal tools and can be localized somewhat easier. In the first 5-10 years of my practice, it used to be possible to have radiology locate the foreign body by ultrasound or CT but owing to those machines being overtaxed, that is almost impossible now and front line clinicians have to go after these foreign bodies as best they can.
