Archaeology News #3 HUGE Amazon City Discovered in Ecuador + English Skeleton DNA
Archaeologists using LiDAR technology have unearthed a massive ancient city in the Amazon and over 6,000 associated mound complexes amongst an interconnected network of canals and roads estimated to have supported between tens of thousands and upwards of hundreds of thousands of citizens around 2,500 years ago. This discovery changes the long-held belief that ancient civilizations in the Amazon were restricted to nomadic behavior and small settlements. Some experts have speculated that this ancient city may be larger than even the largest Mayan city. Excavations are ongoing.
In 2017, in Cambridgeshire, England, a skeleton was discovered and originally thought to be local to the area. But DNA analysis found that the genetics belonged to a Sarmatian male brought to the island sometime in the 2nd century. Evidence supporting Sarmatians in Roman Britain was fleeting until now. This is the first piece of genetic evidence proving Sarmatians were brought to the area. It's unclear whether this Sarmatians was a slave or part of the Roman army as he was buried with no possessions.
