Steroids are biologically active organic compound with four rings arranged in a specific molecular configuration. Steroids have two principal biological functions: as important components of cell membranes which alter membrane fluidity; and as signaling molecules. When we take it in doses higher than the amount our body normally produces, steroids reduce redness and swelling (inflammation). This can help with inflammatory conditions such as asthma. Steroids also reduce the activity of the immune system, which is the body's natural defence against illness and infection.
