Lately, there has been quite a bit of confusion about similar-looking plugs and connectors: the L530 and L630. So today, we are going to help clear that up.
First, let's start with their specifications. NEMA L5-30 is rated for up to 30 amps at 125 volts. It is typically used with smaller RVs, generators, and food trucks. L530 has 3 wires: a ground, neutral, and hot.
NEMA L6-30 also has 3 wires, which can be used to help identify it. L630 has a ground wire and two hot wires, making it capable of running up to 250 volts, but still 30 amps.
The plug or connector on either an L530 or L630 should have markings on it to help identify it. Like we just discussed, L530 will show 125 Volts while L630 will show 250 Volts. The 30 amps are the same for the two. If the voltage doesn’t show, look for the symbols that represent the different wires being used. G is ground. W is neutral, X and Y are hot. If the plug or connector in question has both X and Y without a W, it is 250 volts. If it has one of each, being G, W, X, then it is 125 volts.
Even though both L530 and L630 are 3-prong twist locking style, there is also a slight difference in size. The L630 is a little bit bigger, meaning the prongs are slightly longer and more spread apart.
