How to Determine if Your 14-50 Outlet is Wired Correctly

Are you having issues with your 14-50 outlets? Perhaps you just moved into a new home or had one installed, but it's not powering your appliances or adapters correctly. If so, you're not alone. In this video, we'll explain why this might be happening and how to figure out what's wrong.

First things first, don't automatically assume that your appliance or adapter is to blame. More often than not, it's actually the outlet itself that's causing the issue. Sometimes, 14-50 outlets can be installed for Tesla or other EV charging, and in those cases, the electrician may have left out the neutral to save on costs. Other times, the neutral may not have been installed correctly into the terminal.

To determine if your outlet is the culprit, you'll need a multimeter, preferably one with longer pins. Multimeters are great tools to have around the house for diagnosing simple electrical issues, and they're not expensive.

Once you have a multimeter, set it to AC for AC voltage. Looking at the 14-50 outlet, you'll see four terminals - a ground, two hots, and a neutral. Each hot should read between 110 to 125 volts. To measure this, put one pin in the neutral and the other pin in a hot. You should get a reading between 110 and 125 volts. Do the same for the other hot. If the meter shows nothing, then the neutral is not hooked up at all. If it shows below 110 volts, then the neutral or hot is either loose or hooked up incorrectly, and this needs to be addressed by an electrician.

To check if the ground is hooked up correctly, touch the pins of the multimeter to the ground and neutral terminal. This should read nothing because ground carries no electricity. If you do one of the hots to the ground, it should still read between 110 to 125 volts, because ground is used to complete the circuit. The same applies for the other hot.

If you find that you do have an issue with your 14-50 outlet, do NOT use it until an electrician has fixed it. And if you're unsure about your outlet, it's always best to have an electrician check it out.
