Turned parts are circular in section and when manufactured as bolts, shafts, spindles, washers, etc., they are important components of machines, jigs and fixtures and devices.
Likewise, many tools, e.g. milling cutters, twist-drills, reamers and taps have circular sections. The parts are manufactured from different materials according to requirements.
The parts can be manufactured with different surface finishes.

Process of Turning
To produce a circular sections, the workpiece are made to rotate about their own axis by the lathe. The workpiece thus moves against the cutting edge of the turning tool which removes the chips.
The operation is called "Turning Operation".

Turning Processes
The various shapes of turned parts are obtained by different turning processes. The processes of machining from the outside are known as "Outside Turning" and from the inside as "Inside Turning".
The workpieces are given cylindrical shape by longitudinal turning, plane surfaces by facing or transversal turning, tapers by taper turning, profiles by profile turning and threads by thread cutting.
