For a long time, whenever we talked about Orchestration, it was closely tied into data processing and ETL tools – SSIS, Data Factory, various tools designed to perform a series of tasks when scheduled. But that’s the problem – another tool has to schedule them, whether it’s SQLAgent, Azure Scheduler or Data Factory’s own tumbling windows. But what if you want a reactive orchestration, what if you want event-driven orchestration? Logic Apps fills a huge gap in the Azure story and if you've not tried it yet - you should. Logic Apps provides control-flow style functionality and can orchestrate data from a huge range of common sources and services but the most exciting element is how easily it can be triggered by a huge variety of events. Want to scrape twitter whenever someone uses a certain hashtag? What is you want to take that tweet, perform sentiment analysis and write to PowerBI as soon as it happens, rather than waiting for the next “ETL Window”? Its now possible with zero coding. This session will introduce Logic Apps & how it fits into the Azure Modern Data Warehouse then demonstrate building a twitter scraper step by step, demonstrating the process of building, deploying and debugging an intelligent app. Speaker Details: As Chief Cloud Architect with Adatis Consulting, Simon has been working with the Microsoft BI Stack for a decade, starting off building traditional warehouses with SSIS and SSAS but bringing in alternative technologies where needed. Most recently, he has turned his head to the clouds, advocating new methods of getting insight to the right people. Whether it's automating file ingestion into Azure Data Lakes, applying massive compute via SQLDW & Data Lake Analytics, or simply shifting your current SSIS packages into the cloud, he can help. Simon is a strong advocate of the use of modern development practices in the SQL World (we actually are developers, whether we like it or not) and runs the SQL Surrey PASS chapter.
