Guillermina Baiguera explains that there were no embroiderers in her family. But fate intervened, and one day at the age of 20—she no longer remembers how—embroidery entered her life and changed everything. She left a career that had disappointed her: graphic design, and dedicated herself fully to spending hours creating with thread and needle, discovering embroidery as her means of expression.
Born in Villegas, in the province of Buenos Aires, she lived in New York between 2002 and 2005. It was there that she embroidered extensively and began to exhibit her work for the first time. In 2007, upon returning to Buenos Aires, she founded the Formosa Gallery, an independent project dedicated to promoting local art, but above all, "a space for transmitting knowledge where rescuing, valuing, and making visible disused practices that don't correspond to the commercial or institutional art circuits were its guiding principles." It was there, too, that she began her teaching career, a task she has been carrying out for over 10 years, both in Argentina and abroad. "I am self-taught in embroidery. My training comes from unfinished courses at the University of Buenos Aires, artists' workshops, and astrology," Guillermina explains.
In 2014, she created the publishing house (FE) Formosa Ediciones, dedicated to arts and crafts. She published her first title, "Manual," that same year, which she authored. In 2018, she participated in the group exhibition "Espejo de tela" (Fabric Mirror) at the MAR Museum in Mar del Plata, curated by Constanza Martínez.
In over two decades, Guillermina went from looking at and studying hundreds of embroidery books to creating her own technique and experimenting with each piece. She confesses that at one point she grew tired of embroidering, but “couldn’t stop,” which led to the challenge of embroidering without fabric. She began working with ceramics and other supports that allowed her to create a woven effect. She also explores her “overflowing” techniques, where she embroiders and then undoes the work, exploring the different scars and marks that each stitch leaves on the fabric.
