Hey guys and gals! This week I made the largest bowl Ive made to date. It was turned from an oak tree I cut down in my back yard. It was also the first green bowl I have turned.
I turned it green because it turns a lot easier. The only down side is that it has a chance of cracking while it dries out. I let this bowl dry for about a month. The first couple of days I left it in a bag with the wood shavings I turned off of it. Then for the rest of the time I wrapped it in plastic Wrap on the exterior of the bowl and left the inside uncovered. This seemed to work pretty well for me, But nothing is fool proof.
I used a mixture of denatured alcohol and shellac as a sanding sealer, I put a few coats on it, it helped to harden up the punky wood and also to fill any tear out i had.
The finish I used was actually a spar urethane, I watched a video of another guy using it and he got a mirror finish, I wanted to try the semi gloss first, It turned out looking great. I applied it using a foam brush. Put a good layer on the bowl and then turned the lathe on its lowest setting and used the brush to even the coat. I then left the lathe to run for about an hour. I then let it set for 24 hours, sanded and put another coat on it. All in all I did about 3 coats of the finish and it turned out looking great!
