I recently fired one of my first and nicest clients, it was actually such a relief and I waited way too long to do it -- here's why and what I learned so you’ll know how and when to fire a client.
She was an absolutely lovely person, not a bad client at all, but in a professional sense, it was no longer a good fit:
1. She had been my lowest-paying client for quite a while, so with each of your clients, make sure you regularly assess the time you're putting in vs income you're getting out.
2. When we first started working together, I didn't set expectations around communication, deadlines, or payment, which led to a lot more stress on my end and it became much harder to fix later on.
Setting expectations early will make both you and the client much happier in the long run.
3. I initially said I was just going away for a couple of weeks to get some breathing room and to think, but that led to all sorts of other issues. So if you know you want to fire them, don't leave any room for negotiation, keep it short and simple, and just get it done.
4. If you're letting them go, be polite and professional. I gave her some referrals so it would be easier to find a replacement. You don't have to burn your bridges, it doesn't have to end on bad terms, and who knows, they might even end up referring your next favourite client.
