Kill The Messenger is based on the true story of Gary Webb (Jeremy Renner), a San Jose Mercury News reporter who linked the CIA to the crack-cocaine trade which funded the Nicaraguan Contra rebels who fought their government. As a result Webb became the target of a devastating smear campaign which cost him his job and ultimately his life.
