David Grisman plays Ralph Rinzler’s 1954 Gibson F-5 mandolin
#OnThisDay legendary musician and folklorist Ralph Rinzler was born! In addition to being a talented mandolinist, Rinzler also managed the careers of Doc Watson and Bill Monroe and cofounded the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington D.C.
In this video, mandolin virtuoso David Grisman shares memories of Rinzler, who was one of Grisman’s most influential mentors. Grisman also plays Rinzler’s personal 1954 Gibson F-5 mandolin together with Tracy Bigelow Grisman and Danny Barnes.
