It is not only important to come across a new word and to know the meaning of it but it is very important to remember the word, so that it shall strike to our mind when we need it.
Whenever we come across a new word let us first know which words to remember.
Because, If you look up to remember every new word you see or hear, you will spend your whole day with the dictionary in your hand. That’s no good!
There are two types of words we come across while reading or listening English.
The one which is very rarely used and the other which is most commonly used. The most commonly used word is important to you to remember. While reading just guess the meaning of rarely used words based on the context and do not try hard to learn them to remember them. Knowing once is OK for such words.
The most commonly used words are the ones you know them but you do not know how to use them frequently. Start learning those words using these 5 tips.
1st – Find its meaning in the dictionary.
Sometimes there are multiple meanings for a single word.
Know all the meanings for their appropriate use
2nd – Find its parts of speech –
certain words have pronunciation based on their parts of speech.
In this video we see some most commonly used words changing their pronunciation for verb & noun.
3rd - Know its pronunciation – pronunciation is given in between 2 slashes
/…./ in dictionaries using phonetic symbols
4th – know its usage – try to write one sentence using that word in correct sentence structure. You can refer to example sentences in dictionaries. And make similar sentence on your own.
If the word has multiple meanings..then try to write example sentences for each meaning.
Please remember that we will not forget a word when we use it frequently.
Hence, as a most important tip…
Use the new Word as many times as you can on the day you learn it.
Using it at number of occasions is the best tip to remember the word forever.
So friends, Try to learn one word a day to acquire rich vocabulary. Make a WORD OF THE DAY note. Paste it visible to you or record in your phone or write it in your hand-book.
Once on any week day review all the words learnt during the week. Try to find other forms of the words learnt in that week. For example we learn punctual in this video…and find the other forms of the word, their meaning, parts of speech, usage.
