For purposes of experimentation science must assume that there are no external forces operating on a system. But it often goes on to adopt the position that no such participant exists -- there's nobody minding the store. The uncertainty of quantum theory provides for a trigger effect that makes free will possible. Individual organisms can transcend or use determinism for their own ends. Determinism is about means; fate is about ends.
