What role does color play with respect to the location of melanin within the lesion being evaluated?
Black pigmentation is suggestive of very superficial melanin, such as within the stratum corneum.
Brown coloration is consistent with melanin within the dermal-epidermal junction.
Gray or blue pigmentation is suggestive of deeper melanin deposition within the papillary dermis.
