Firing the M16A1 rifle. The M16A1 was first issued around 1967 to US troops fighting in Vietnam. The design lacks a forward assist and spent case deflector, which is a bit uncomfortable for left handed shooters (as can be seen in the video). It’s light weight was a welcome change from the hefty M14, but this was quickly overshadowed by its unreliability in the jungles of Vietnam. This was caused by the rifle not being issues with a cleaning kit and the US Army’s decision to change gunpowder types which caused increased powder fouling.
It isn’t the most controllable shoulder fired mg because of its light weight, but when fired in bursts or in semi-automatic it was an effective combat arm.
