A Green Royal Edict

The UK’s Royal Mail has long relied on “posties” who beat the streets to deliver the mail the old-fashioned way - on foot.

But the service has stepped things up a bit with a zealous 4-step plan to reach net-zero by 2040.

Key figures behind the push are the 5.8% increase in emissions from 2020-2021, probably due at least in part to lockdown-fueled online shopping binges.

Factor in the increased volume, and the Royal Mail still managed to decrease emissions intensity by 6.9%.

Fishing As Bad As Flying?

It is - at least if you’re a commercial bottom-trawling fishing boat. It’s not because of the boats themselves, but because bottom-trawling intentionally disturbs the world’s largest carbon sink - the ocean floor.

It’s an unholy environmental trifecta - terrible for biodiversity, devastating to seafloor environments, and resulting in increased emissions from disturbed sediments.

Canada Joins the VCM

Well, not so much “joins” as “builds its own.” The Canadian Environment Minister has proposed building a national carbon offsets market.

The offsets will be traded under the same framework as carbon credits.

The current idea is to start small, with offsets generated by local municipalities that trap methane emissions from landfills.

Your Carbon Credit Scorecard Is:

The Carbon Credits Quality Initiative (CCQI) aims to solve the pesky problem of sorting “good” credits from “bad” ones, the ones with little additionality and poor quality control.

To make that process easier, they’ve devised an online scorecard that assesses credits on a number of points, including:
• Type of project
• Accrediting organization
• Project’s country of origin
• Date
• Quantification methodology

The CCQI is supported by the WWF, the Environmental Defense Fund, and a number of key environmental organizations.

Ready for the Carbon Market To Take Off?

Ernst and Young, market analysts of some repute, estimate that the volume of carbon credits will increase by upwards of 40x by 2035.

Credit prices will rise as well, potentially reaching $150 per tonne by the same date. That’d be a six-fold increase over current prices, which average around $25 per tonne depending on the market.

Put another way - despite the explosive growth the global carbon market has seen in the past few years, this isn’t the main show yet.

We’re still in the warm-up stages.

EU Parliament Rejects EU ETS Reform

The European Parliament voted down the biggest reform bill of the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) after a surprising series of votes that blocked its passage.
