Diversity is extremely important to automation, to engineering and to science as a whole. Diversity helps people study things from new and different perspectives. It adds creativity, brings more innovation and better results. Industries focused on STEM are not diverse enough could benefit from focusing on ways to make them more diverse.
The focus on diversity and inclusion needs to start from a young age. Unconscious bias plays a role in the division of what girls are taught to focus on versus boys. But it is not just education where we need to see a change. Young kids need to see role models in these roles – they need to see what they want to be in order to become it.
A diverse team is going to innovate better than a non-diverse team. Research shows that a diverse team of problem solvers is going to outperform and innovate better than a non-diverse team. It allows companies to produce a product that supports a more diverse population.
