You light wood in the primary combustion chamber, close the lid, and the flame passes into the secondary combustor. The preheater tube superheats secondary air and mixes it with the flame as it enters. You adjust the power and mixing ratio by moving the preheater tube up or down, which changes the flow through the mixing nozzle. A feedback effect stabilizes the primary combustion rate at the desired power level.
In effect, you get a clean flame, adjustable, stable power, and a long burn time.
