Hey Folks! This is my recovery song folks, and the final installment from ‘The Backswoods Sassafras’ sessions.
In another life, I am not ashamed to share with you that I had an addiction. I was battling alcoholism and prescription drugs. At the time, life was grim and simply making it through another day was the goal. Luckily, I had the support of my family, The Lord, and a will to survive. That trifecta allowed me to mend and get back to the REAL me.
What I learned from the experience is how forgetful I was of the things that made me happy - like performing my music, and creativity in general. I allowed people to tell me I was wasting my time because “..small town folks with no real connections never get too far in entertainment”. I turned to addiction to cope with a life where ambition no longer existed.
Today, I’m here to tell you - that mentality is hogwash! In fact, it was a small town upbringing that gave me every tool I ever needed to succeed.
Small town taught me hard work, family values, a reverence for a higher power, communication with your neighbors and an overall attitude of love and light. So when I say:
That Backswoods Sassafras ain’t what they think it outta be
Don’t step on me
Don’t walk around talking like you know
Don’t walk away
Unless you know about a lady from a small town who came to the city and blew em away!
I meant that from my heart, and I hope you feel it the same way! I love you all! 💖
