The second largest city of Peru and its former capital (today - the second capital), was founded in 1540 on a downhill, at the foot of three volcanoes (Chachani, Misti and Picchu Picchu), and is known as the "white city". Arequipa got this name because of the specific, white (sometimes pale pink) volcanic stone called sillar, from which almost all the buildings are built and whose quarry is located at the foot of one of the three mountain-volcanoes. Arequipa is the second capital of Peru and the seat of the Supreme Court. Arequipa is somewhat different from the rest of Peru, sunny, bright, bright and strangely reminiscent of the Spanish colonial cities of Mexico. The center of the old town is located around the Plaza de Armas, and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Because of the historical importance of this city, many Peruvians have special feelings for Arequipa and often consider it more important than Lima. The famous Nobel Laureate, Peruvian writer Mario Vargas Llosa was also born in the white city.
