The most common type of contact dermatitis, in which the skin is injured by friction, environmental factors such as cold, over-exposure to water, or chemicals such as acids, alkalis, detergents and solvents.
It is nonallergic skin reaction, that occurs when a substance damages the epidermis and outer dermis.
Examples of irritant:
Solvents, bleach, detergents, pesticides, fertilizers
Shampoos, permanent wave solutions, rubbing alcohol
Plants, airborne substances (e.g. sawdust, wool dust)
Some people react to strong irritants after a single exposure. Others may develop signs and symptoms after repeated exposures to even mild irritants. And some people develop a tolerance to the substance over time.
