This is a song about an unsolved murder on a German soldier during the occupation of Holland in World War II. The German officer in charge of the strictly religious town where the murder took place executed seven innocent people in retaliation.
It is based on 'De Vergelding', a book by Dutch author Jan Brokken. You can read about it here:
