So you want to improve your English? Let me tell you a story. A man has been cutting a tree in his backyard four hours, and his neighbor approaches the man and says: Why don't you just sharpen the saw? The man answers: Because I don't have time. I'm busy. I'm cutting the tree. Doesn't that seem stupid to you? Because it does to me. And sometimes we do the same when learning English. That's why we need to sharpen our saw, so to speak. We need to improve our methods of learning English. And today I have compiled five ways to learn English more effectively. Let's go.
First of all, don't study individual words. Instead, learn word chunks. What does that mean? Let's say you want to learn the word go to go. The verb go ,present tense, and past tense: went, gone. And somebody would just take a dictionary and study this word by itself. Go went, gone. That wouldn't be so productive. And you probably wouldn't be able to use this word afterwards in a real conversation. What I would suggest to you is to take a book or a movie or a podcast and try to find this word. Let's say in a movie, a character says: I'm gonna go home right now. So the word go is used in a sentence. It's a word chunk, a sentence, and you would memorize the whole chunk instead of just one individual word. You would memorize the expression: I'm gonna go home right now. Or a character might say: I'm gonna go to my friend's house right now. You wouldn't memorize the word go individually, but instead you would memorize the whole sentence. So I hope you get the picture. Don't learn individual words. Instead, learn word chunks.
The second tip is shadowing, a really simple concept, but it is not so easy to do, especially at first. Basically, you just take a recording of somebody, preferably a native Speaker speaking. It could be a movie, a YouTube video, or a podcast, and you try to repeat everything that that person says word by word. It especially helps with your pronunciation. So try this technique.
The third piece of advice is to not focus on the language itself. Don't focus on the language itself. Don't focus on learning English. Instead, focus on the topic on the message that is being delivered. Like, for example, if you are interested in engineering, do not try to learn English through engineering. Instead, try to learn engineering through English. Like, go on YouTube and search: engineering. Not "engineering English vocabulary" or something like that, just "engineering". Or Let's say you are interested in makeup and fashion. Try to learn about makeup in fashion through English. Focus on the topic, on the people, not on the language.
The fourth step is to repeat, repeat, repeat. The power of repetition is insane when it comes to languages. Take one movie or one video or one podcast and listen to it over and over again. Listen to it like, 10 times, 20 times, 50 times, 100 times. The more the better. And it might be a little boring, but it will improve your English immensely. Trust me, it will not only expand your vocabulary, but it will also automatically, with no effort on your part, improve your grammar. Give it a try. Take one video or one movie, 1 podcast one book and listen to it or read it a hundred times. You will see the results.
The final piece of advice is to not expect results quickly. Don't expect results quickly. It's just like with everything in life, it's gonna take twice as much as you thought it would. Do not expect to achieve native - like level in, let's say, six months or even a year. It's going to take a little longer than that. So just be patient, stick to your routine and good luck on your way to becoming a really good and confident English speaker.
