In the retro gaming community, there is a small but vocal minority of elitists who want to gatekeep retro games as a hobby, particularly when somebody is not playing these classics the same way that they do (i.e. the "wrong way"). In this video, I discuss why the retro gaming elitism of today is not just rude but also stupid. I talk about latency and whether it's a real concern, the increasing price of this hobby, the realities of using physical hardware and original games nowadays, the narcissism of shelf collecting by some people, chasing false nostalgia, and even DKOldies resorting to gatekeeping recently on Facebook.
Real hardware is cool. CRT TVs are fine. The MiSTER FPGA is an impressive piece of hardware. Emulation is excellent nowadays. However, elitism and gatekeeping in this community are not cool.
