A Ron Pellegrino/Salvatore Martirano real time electronic music duet with a visual music real time performance - no editing of either the music or the video. I was playing my road system - an ARP 2600, 2 Synthi AKSes and a 200 Series Buchla Box; Sal was playing his invention, the SalMar Construction.
The real time video was created especially for this presentation.
The music was recorded in 1973 in one of Sal's studios at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign where Sal was a professor. I was on campus as an invited artist in connection with the PHOENIX73 NEW ARTS FESTIVAL. While I was there we both did solo concerts as well as a duet concert. For three days and nights we played duets exploring common sonic ground of which there was a great deal. Some of our duets are included on one of the 8 CDs which make up part of my EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES PROJECT. The duets are on CD 2 called ITALIAN-AMERICAN ELECTRONIC MUSIC DRAMAS for obvious reasons. The three other duets are titled PHOENIX RISING, FREE ELECTRONS AND BROTHERLY BREEZING .
This piece is one of a very large set of pieces born of a conversational process . For over four and a half decades as a composer I've been exploring a compositional process called emergent music, a process with roots in conversation. Employing the full range of electronic and acoustic resources I've run many hundreds of experimental studies in public and in private working to get a sense of both the intricacies and the scope of a field that seems virtually limitless. A few years ago I put my findings in public forms accessible to whomever might want to look over my shoulder and/or to join the hunt for the limits of the field. The published project is called EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES; it includes 2 books, 6 CDs and a set of 4 DVDs all available via Amazon.com.
