How much power does a TV use?

In this video, I explain a simple way to estimate your TV's electricity usage.

First, I’ll use my own smart TV as an example to show you how to find its power usage (in watts) and then use simple math to estimate how much electricity your TV uses per hour (in kWh). This method works for any type of TV—LED, OLED, or LCD.

This is especially helpful if you want to estimate the cost of watching your TV, or figure out how much battery power you’d need to run it off-grid.

Next, I’ll use an electricity usage monitor to measure the actual energy consumption of my TV and compare it to the earlier estimates. This real-world test will give you a clear picture of how much electricity a TV really uses.

And at the end of the video, you'll find a table where I share some estimates for different types and sizes of TVs—so your TV's power usage will probably fall somewhere in there.

At the end of the video, you’ll see a handy comparison table showing average power consumption for different TV sizes and types—so you can easily find where your own TV fits in. For example, a 55‑inch LED TV typically uses around 60 watts of power, or about 0.04–0.06 kWh per hour, which works out to roughly 1¢ per hour of watch time.

After watching this video, you'll have a pretty solid - if not an exact - idea of how much electricity your TV really uses.

Turns out, my 32-inch LED TV uses about 0.035 kWh/hour. How much energy does YOUR TV use? Share in the comments below.

And If you have any questions, drop them in the comments, and I'll be happy to help!
