In this video, I show you exactly how to calculate TV runtime using a 12V battery, including real-world testing with a 12V 100Ah battery and inverter.
How long will a 12V battery run a TV during a power outage, camping trip, or off-grid setup?
In this video, I break down a simple and accurate method to estimate how many hours your TV can run on a 12V battery. We start by looking at how much power a TV actually uses and how to find your TV’s wattage from the label on the back.
Next, I explain how to calculate battery capacity in watt-hours using voltage and amp-hours, and why usable capacity matters more than rated capacity.
You’ll learn the difference between lead-acid and lithium batteries, depth of discharge (DOD), battery lifespan, and how much energy you can realistically use from a 12V 100Ah battery without damaging it.
I also cover inverter efficiency, which has a huge impact on real-world TV runtime. Since running a TV on a battery requires converting 12V DC to 120V AC, I explain how inverter size and load affect efficiency—and why assuming 75–85% efficiency is more realistic for small systems.
Finally, I run my own TV on a 12V battery and measure its real energy usage with a power meter. We compare the math to real-world results and show why TVs often use less power than their rated wattage suggests.
