Meet Cate Hills, a determined young woman who has embarked on an apprenticeship with First Light Electrical Solutions, challenging gender stereotypes in the male-dominated field of electrical work. Cate has chosen to pursue a hands-on career as an electrician, combining her love for the outdoors with her fascination for electrical systems.

"I've always been a really active outdoorsy person, and I basically always knew that university wasn't for me," says Cate, reflecting on her career choice. "Growing up, I've had a lot of influence from my dad just because he's in a trade, and I really just wanted to follow suit and do something like that. And I found electrical quite interesting. And, yeah, I'm enjoying it so far."

As a first-year electrical apprentice based in Gisborne, Cate has already gained valuable experience working on solar installations. She explains, "In a Solar Install, I'll be creating a Solar Box that involves me putting together a couple of boxes, connecting some cables, running them back to the switchboard."
