Lillian Disney’s Surprising Interview
Maybe this is one of the reasons she didn’t give a lot of interviews 😂 Lillian also said, “I’ve always had the feeling, ‘don’t get too big, too large.’”
The logic behind not building any parks outside of the US was so that America had something unique that would “get all the recognition from all over the world from this place.” Given that Walt Disney was fiercely patriotic, it makes sense that Lillian would hold this opinion. But I also think that it’s likely that it was just her opinion, especially when it comes to suggesting WED Imagineering could “just quit right now. I mean the whole thing,” when referring to what they should do next after the completion of EPCOT Center. Clearly, Walt Disney was not one to just quit moving forward and stop dreaming, new dreams, so it’s more likely that this was just what she thought they should do, possibly because Epcot was the last major project that her husband had had a hand in before he passed. If they had stopped in 1982, there would be no other international parks outside of Disneyland Tokyo, no Disney Cruise Line, and no Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom, or California Adventure parks.
Lillian Disney wasn’t afraid of sharing her opinions with her husband over the years, from how much she hated his hat, to disliking the name, Mortimer for his new cartoon mouse (suggesting Mickey instead). But Lillian preferred not to be in the public eye very much, so she did not do very many interviews. This one took place in 1982 after the completion of Epcot, and was conducted in the UK pavilion with Lillian and Walt’s daughter Diane Disney Miller, and their granddaughter Jenny.
