Recreating Suffragette Pennies
During the course of the feminist fight for women's right to vote an extremist group known as the suffragettes went to extremes to get their voices heard. One such act of rebellion was the defacement of the coinage, especially the destruction of the kings image, with the phrase votes for women.
In order to both honour and learn something about the Suffragettes and this point in history I have endeavoured to recreate this iconoclasm by taking some period coins and, this the tools alible at the time, defacing the currency in the same way.
With the act of historic re-enactment complete of course I then need something to do with the coins so I have then turned them into jewellery for the women in my family.
