The Forerunner engineered monster - The Sharquoui - Halo Lore.
The Sharquoi were bioengineered by the Forerunners to fight the Flood. And are immune to Flood infection. The Covenant discovered the creatures the so called Drinols and kept their scarce supply close. Ths Sharquoi have been an element of Halo lore that has been shrouded in secret since their reveal in the Halo 2 special edition.
The Forerunners developed many solutions to combat the Flood including the Forerunner sentinels, burn weapons, the machine Promethean knights through the composer and of course the Halo array itself. They were introduced in a big way in the novel Halo: Envoy. Although their developmental roots are stemmed in Bungies earlier franchise Marathon.
