Quick technology take for your consideration: you don’t need an API to start automating your IT infrastructure.
I think a lot of engineers get bogged down by the amount of choice they have when implementing an automation strategy, then never accomplish any automation. My advice? don’t overthink it! You don’t need the fanciest new network router or switch, you don’t need a RESTful API, or gRPC. You don’t need to overhaul your application just to perform some automation.
In fact, a huge amount of automation is done with just SSH.. both traditional Linux automation and network automation.
How? With Ansible. Many organizations today are using it to automate both their latest and greatest infrastructure, as well as their legacy systems. Ansible is connection agnostic… meaning, it doesn’t care how you connect to IT infrastructure. If there is an API, sure Ansible is happy to use it, but if you just want to run some basic shell commands, Ansible can do that too. This allows you to get started today, rather than waiting for tomorrow.
So if you find yourself having trouble getting started with IT automation, think about your strategy and whether you’re making it harder than it needs to be. Don’t sweat it - automate it!
