External Mic - Getting Good Sound In Challenging Situations

As promised, I shot this new video over the weekend to show you why we use and recommend upgrading your equipment to include an external microphone.
For higher quality audio, you will want to get a camera with an external microphone input and then add external mics. There are several types of microphones you can choose from and they each are good for different audio and shooting situations.
Lavalier mics (wired or wireless) are placed on the person. and will make a 200% improvement in the sound of the person speaking over a built-in mic. You can buy a simple lavalier mic for a little over $25 online at http://budurl.com/AudioTechnicaMic. Professional lavaliers cost $250 and up. These mics can be wired or wireless.
Shotgun mics can be used on the camera, on a boom pole or a mic stand. Contrary to what many people think, a shotgun mic does not amplify or "reach out" to get the sound in front of it. It works by ignoring the sounds to the side and behind it to varying degrees, depending on the design.
You can spend thousands of dollars on a top end pro model, but good quality can be had in the $200 -- $500 range.
