Intro:

On both sides of a section of the Yangtze River stand a number of shipbuilding workshops, with shipbuilders rustling around on a number of huge ships under construction. These giant ships are built for a German client and are worth 15 million euros each. The short film "Shell" documents the daily work of the shipbuilders: their busy figures disappear into the noise of the machines, drowning in the globalized cycle of production and consumption, in which they themselves are participants.

From the short film, we see scenes of their work and life, but the task of "Hull" goes beyond simply showing people these often little-known images. The fog outside and the gloom inside the hull are not meant to demonstrate visual haziness, but rather to insinuate a disconnect between the heat of the workplace and the elusive, whirlwind flow of transnational capital. Near the end of the short film, there is a small interlude: the warm ochre tones of the images show the strength and grace of the body, temporarily allowing the viewer to leave the flood of modernity behind.
