Kaukau summit walk
The view from the summit of Kaukau - the highest easily accessible point close to Wellington City - is well worth the effort getting there. You can choose from a number of tracks - this video shows what you can expect if you take the popular route from the carpark at the end of Truscott Avenue adjacent to Johnsonville Park. The track initially climbs 20 flights of steps through native bush then follows the Te Araroa Trail to the observation deck. However, the true summit of Kaukau is further north, 350m past the mast. Please remember that there are now kiwis living around Kaukau so dogs definitely need to be on a lead – dogs and kiwi do not play well together.
