Benne and Sheats explained the group roles members and group leaders play: task roles and group building and maintenance roles. These are also called social or interpersonal relationship roles.
Typical task roles are the elaborator, oriented, coordinator, energizer, etc.
Typical group building and maintenance roles are encourager, harmonizer, compromiser, gatekeeper, etc.
