Set in France at the start of German occupation, this tender love story follows the untimely romance between Lucille, a passionate French villager (Michelle Williams) and Bruno, a German soldier (Rust & Bone's Matthias Schoenaerts).
Suite Francaise is based on the journal of Irène Némirovsky, a Polish Jew who wrote it in 1942 before being arrested and ultimately executed at Auschwitz. It was meant to be the beginning of a five-novel series, but only two parts were written before her arrest. They were preserved by her daughters and published as a combined volume in 2004.
The screenplay for Suite Francaise was adapted by Ronald Harwood, who won an Oscar for his script for Roman Polanski's Holocaust drama The Pianist.
