For those new to knitting or just learning to knit:
A rapport is a repeating part of a pattern. A rapport for each pattern has a specific number of stitches across the width and a specific number of rows across the height. The number of stitches in a row must be a multiple of the number of stitches in the rapport, and stitches for pattern symmetry are indicated additionally (if present in the pattern). Example: "The number of stitches is a multiple of 2 + 1 + 2 edge stitches." In this case, 1 is the stitch for pattern symmetry.
An asterisk* symbol means that the portion of the pattern between the asterisks *-* should be repeated to the end of the row, and the stitches before the asterisk are worked at the beginning of the row for symmetry, while those after the asterisks are worked at the end of the row.
Abbreviations:
● st – stitch;
● sp – needle;
● sp – spare needle;
● selv – edge stitch;
● k – knit stitch;
● p – purl stitch;
● inc – increase stitch;
● ss – crossed stitch;
● crisscross – crossed stitches are two or more stitches that are crossed from left to right or right to left, usually using a spare needle.
