Get in the practice of making the first link in your content an internal one. There are two reasons here. First is that you don't want to send a visitor off-page before they've even read the first paragraph. Second, think of this from a journalistic point of view where you present the most important information first. If Google weighs the value of links, those at the top will have the highest value. So prioritize your links.
When I see an outbound link as the first one on the page, usually it indicates sloppy writing — the author took a look at the top performing post and essentially rewrote it. Often they’ll link back to that post because maybe it mentioned a study. That’s poor journalism - always link to the primary source of information where possible.
