Christine Wilson is a self-taught Australian photographer and nurse based in Melbourne. Her interest in photography was sparked early by her father, who was a photographer and artist. He inspired her during family trips when he would stop to capture scenes like old barns or coastal landscapes. In the 1990s, she began to pursue photography seriously, purchasing a Pentax P30N SLR and learning darkroom techniques. Digital photography later allowed her to reconnect with the medium, expanding her practice into urban and natural settings.

Wilson is drawn to monochrome photography, which she feels intensifies textures and highlights contrasts, lending a timeless quality to her coastal landscapes. Her work often showcases Victoria’s wilder coastlines, with a particular affection for the Great Ocean Road and Mornington Peninsula. She appreciates the sense of vulnerability these rugged landscapes evoke, capturing the grand scale of seascapes and more minor details, like shells or weathered artifacts from shipwrecks.

Christine’s toolkit remains simple; she doesn’t prioritize frequent upgrades, preferring to master the potential of her existing equipment. She also enjoys using ND filters for long exposures, which smooth water surfaces and emphasize cloud movement. For Christine, the essence of each image lies in capturing the mood, she felt while shooting, a philosophy that guides her minimalist approach to gear and her dedication to black-and-white photography.
