Montana Western #31 - Winton 6-Cylinder Engine, Model 106A Start Up!
The mechanical and cosmetic restoration of our model 106A Winton engine was successfully completed in the spring of 2025. The engine has also been successfully moved back inside the motorcar.
This is a huge step in preserving this unique motor car for future generations to learn about and enjoy. We would like to thank you all for your support! We are now focusing efforts on restoring the motorcar's radiator. After the radiator is restored, the motorcar will be put back into service and used during special occasions.

The Montana Western #31 (AKA Great Northern #2313) is not a locomotive per se, nor a diesel, it is the oldest surviving, and largely unmodified gas-electric car built by the Electro-Motive Corporation. It is powered by a Winton 6-cylinder engine, model 106A, using gasoline for fuel.
In 2002, MW#31 was nominated as a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) by ASME Chicago, Fox Valley, and Rock River Valley sections, ASME Region VI History and Heritage, and ASME Rail Transportation Division. The nomination was accepted on June 15th. The public dedication ceremony took place on August 16, 2003.
